A yacht spotter’s guide to Dubai during DIBS 2024

Cana Gökhan and Fatih Sürekli, partners in life and co-founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a>, are aboard 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a>, the first in the new steel-hulled series of pocket superyachts they designed for boutique builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>. The yacht made her debut at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and our conversation has turned to the perception of Turkish yacht designers and their status in the industry.&nbsp;“It can be a disadvantage in this business if you’re not from the UK, Italy or Holland,” says Cana. “Even when we propose something better, the top yards will usually pick Italians or British designers, which is one reason why we set up a London office and moved there. But what hurts most is that the big Turkish players are the same. They have their comfort zone and want to work with overseas designers because that is how they sell boats, so why try something new?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296392/image/large-9364cd32a6ef49c0f5ec76faa2df081d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296392">She has a point. There is no intrinsic reason why the British, Italians or Dutch should make better designers. You could argue that the large yacht industry in Europe is older and more established, but Turkey now ranks third in the world after Italy and the Netherlands. Moreover, when you consider that Noah’s Ark may well have been built by Turkish shipwrights you realise that boat building is something they’ve been doing successfully for a very long time.“Attitudes are starting to change,” says Fatih. “There is a new generation of managers looking to beat their own path. They’re young, tech-savvy and much more willing to invest in home-grown talent.”&nbsp;One name that pops up is Emre Sandan, a contemporary of Cana and Fatih who shares a similar background. Cana graduated in architecture from Yıldız Technical University and worked for the Ulutas outfitting company before moving to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> in Istanbul where she was lead interior designer for the now defunct <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> brand and its highly regarded motoryacht series. While at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> she met Fatih, a naval architect who studied at the same university, as did Emre Sandan, who also worked at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> and other Turkish shipyards before recently setting up his own engineering company, Mes Marine.“There was a nucleus of designers and naval architects who graduated from Yıldız Technical University and started working in yachting when the Turkish industry was taking off,” says Fatih. “We were reunited with Emre when he was shipyard manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a> and we were chosen to create the exterior and interior design of the XSR series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286676/image/large-721d8b3c89275bae9dd7325a93babc55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286676">The first in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp</a>’s XSR 85 series, aptly named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, debuted at last year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and stole the show with its youthful design ethos and bright Porsche Guards Red hull. Designed and built with intelligence, originality and a big dollop of fun, in terms of layout, creativity and efficiency the 26-metre yacht was in many ways a precursor to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s new displacement series.&nbsp;Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a>, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a> 92DS <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a> sports chunky crossover styling, but pushes the design boundaries even further. The raised pilothouse is positioned well forward to maximise the interior volumes and aft deck space, the vertical bow adds visual impact and increases the waterline length, and the two-tone paintwork introduces a striking new aesthetic. Not only is it <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s first displacement model, it is also the first steel-hulled yacht to be equipped with triple <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion.“The edgy proportions and exterior lines of the DS series are inspired by the design DNA of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s fast runabouts,” says Fatih. “The idea was to create something new and different with huge windows, generous interior volumes and big exterior spaces. Having the IPS engines so far aft helped a lot in terms of layout and meant we could create a massive beach club in the stern.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241189/image/large-9019ae7b530840f6c0924bdaf2f238a7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241189">Cana’s interior design is based on a summerhouse aesthetic: cool, calming and casual with oak veneers, light-coloured fabrics and occasional stand-out statements like the backlit feature wall in the main salon made of thinly cut sections of stone. The couple made a conscious effort to avoid using rare materials and are firm believers in the ‘less is more’ school of thought summed up in Coco Chanel’s famous advice about fashion accessories: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”“We don’t like palatial or extravagant interiors,” says Cana, a keen sailor who recently completed an RYA Competent Crew Course in Southampton. “It’s a question of taste, of course, but if we don’t feel it we don’t do it. Luxury is not about stuffing boats full of rare and expensive materials; it’s more about taking away. Simplicity is better than embellishment. Just being out at sea with friends and family is a luxury in itself. The experience is what’s important and we’re already talking with clients about reducing the quantity of interior materials on board.”&nbsp;As nominal head of design at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> (they avoid formal titles) Cana jokes she is the brains behind the operation, but it is clear they relish being able to work together on both the interior and exterior design of projects along with their 10-person strong team in London and Istanbul.&nbsp;“I don’t like when there is a mismatch between the interior and exterior styling,” says Fatih. “It can sometimes be a surprise, but usually the effect is jarring. Working on both means they develop in tandem and we avoid any discrepancies in style.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113293/image/large-45201de725fcff303c860c9c8e1e4666.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113293">While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7582" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edge26.0m (85'4&quot;)Sarp Yachts2022">Edge</a> was the first to hit the headlines and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a> is sure to bring more media exposure, Red Yacht Design has been busy on other larger projects. Among others, they designed the interior of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>’s 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10690" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="B.A.L.M.Y.47.3m (155'2&quot;)Mengi Yay Yachts2022">B.A.L.M.Y.</a> launched last year; oversaw the interior and exterior refit of 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atina 46.7m (153'3&quot;)Heesen Yachts2008">Atina</a>, also relaunched last year; created the interior concept for the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bering Yachts (Company)">Bering</a> 125, as well as the exterior and interior design of the “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13126" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion One43.8m (143'8&quot;)Orion Yachts2024">Orion One</a>” 43-metre motoryacht for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7235" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion Yachts (Company)">Orion Yachts</a>. They have also started work on a new 50-metre and just signed for a 63-metre project, both in Turkey and still confidential. ICE Kite, a wonderfully sleek 64-metre motoryacht designed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> for a German client that makes use of a supplementary kite propulsion system, also looks like it is back on track three years after it was first presented.As relative newcomers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> is not encumbered with the pressure to play it safe, which makes all the difference. Younger owners generally prefer open-plan spaces, outdoor living, unique experiences, holistic design and understated luxury. Cana and Fatih have locked on to these styling cues to imbue their projects with a contemporary vigour that is compelling and exciting.&nbsp;"There are so many boats out there that look the same," says Cana. “We like doing things differently and we don’t want to feel like we’re just designing another boat. We’ve been lucky so far that the yards we’ve worked with have all been bold and brave and also want to make an impact. The 37 metre superyacht Fusion was captured around midday local time in a distressing state as she seemed to be collecting water around her stern area. The footage shows the yacht’s crew having deployed a life raft with a large towing vessel making its way to the scene also visible.

Gokhan Celik, together with his partner Ömer Koray, founded Alia Yachts in 2008 after selling Peri Yachts, which they had started in 2003. With two new yachts scheduled for delivery later this year, we visited Gokhan Celik in Antalya at the end of last summer who talked us through the Alia Yachts journey.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157770/image/large-d09de6ff3b55e0410de936f679184f1a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157770">How did you get the order for the first sailing yachts you undertook?We had an American client approach us with his designer, Warwick Yacht Design, when we were still at Peri Yachts. We kept in touch, and after I had sold the company, I set up Alia Yachts. They knew that we were good at composite construction, and after some due diligence and a lot of technical discussions they decided to build the yacht with us.The 41m displacement yacht Rüya was launched last summer. Was she initially planned to be constructed using composite materials?In the beginning the boat was thought to be a steel and aluminum yacht, like most displacement yachts. But then the owner’s representative had the idea to do the project in composite, and once it became apparent that we could indeed build the yacht in composite, they really pushed for that. We said it would be easier to build in steel and aluminum but they said, “No. If you can do it, we need it to be done in the composite.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157771/image/large-b6e0e51a13a251d52dda163f86245989.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157771">By keeping the company very low profile over the past few years, you have managed to sell more than six yachts over 24 metres. How did you achieve that?We get most of our business through word of mouth and references of people we previously dealt with; not only clients but also owner’s representatives and designers. I am yet to sell a boat through a broker. There are one or two projects that we got through our personal network, but it is not enough to solely rely on that. Networking, like in any business, is important, but you have to have a certain way of doing something very well in addition to delivering a quality product, so that your network can trust you with the job.Are you open to work with brokers?Of course. As long as it is a decent deal, I am open to work with anybody. It has to be clear, transparent. Brokers are very important part of this business. They all respect and trust the client, and the shipyard as well.What’s your goal in regards to the amount of yachts you want to construct at once?It is absolutely not our intention to be a serial builder in the foreseeable future. For us, the optimum would be working on 3 to 4 large yachts at any given time, depending on the size. Above and beyond everything we’re custom yacht builders. We must protect this identity and as part of being true to this identity, be able to offer each client a unique journey through the build process.Technically, we must also recognise and respect our capabilities and capacities. We do not want to get bigger, but rather be better and better at what we do, while relentlessly increasing the quality of the product. I’ve always believed that people – from top to bottom – are the most important ingredient of what we do. Over the years we have assembled an exemplary group of people that love and respect what they do. But there’s only so many of them and there are only so many projects they can do at any given time. So we will work within this capacity but relentlessly work to keep improving the quality of what we do and the quality of the bespoke journey we offer to our clients.All your projects now are full custom. Do you want to keep creating custom yachts or is a semi-custom line also an option?It is an ongoing debate whether we should introduce a semi-custom line. It can be done, but we feel it is a step for the future, not for right now. We are working with a lot of well-known yacht designers and we have had this discussion with them as well. It will be a very rewarding venture, but in my opinion not a very easy one to achieve.You designed a 16m day-boat that turned out to be very successful, with all four built and all sold. Was that a planned venture?It was absolutely coincidence; a very important client of ours was not happy with the day boat he had, and asked me if I could do a boat for him. Once we did it for him another client saw it and wanted the same boat, and it just caught on from there.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/157772/image/large-7fd1086e9e845e249e9c44cf4dee40b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/157772">On smaller boats, I believe it is harder to combine form and function in a very efficient manner. When designing the boat with Bill Dixon, we looked at what is out there, what are the clients’ needs, and what other people who might be interested in this boat might look into it or need. He did a very good design, we built great boats and the whole thing is very successful. This is a boat we are very excited about.What are the upcoming projects for Alia Yachts?We currently have a 30 metre and a 60 metre under construction that will both be delivered in 2016. We have spent the last year improving the process of our constructions and adding quality to our products in order to qualify for ISO. As you know, you can get ISO certification from anywhere but we wanted to be associated with the Lloyd's name as it is important for our clients and us. A bespoke journey: talking to Alia Yachts

SYT's Merijn de Waard spotted the 41 metre superyacht Desire in Palmarina in Turkey earlier this month. The project started out at the Peri yard, however, after the shipyard seized its activities, the yacht was moved to Karides Yachts to be completed.
