Bond comments, “It’s really exciting to be working with such a well thought-out fully custom yacht. The features she boasts both mechanically and aesthetically are outstanding. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>’s BGM75, the first model in the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> range of multihull motor yachts, creates a parallel segment between the catamaran and monohull markets. SuperYacht Times spoke with Luca Santella, Head of Product Strategy at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a>, onboard the BGM75 during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> to find out more.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/184347/image/large-5c8291de2144fa7b19c3e9938609a760.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/184347">How did the BGM concept get off the ground?It actually started when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> became part of &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> in 2018. Max Perotti always had the idea of producing a range of multihulls and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> was the ideal vehicle and together with Fabio Buzzi and FB Design we did some initial concept analysis, but the time wasn’t right for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> or the multihull market. As the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> brand became more established and the market matured, we started up our research again. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289244/image/large-b103a38a62df559c55de5994c912d01a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289244">We’re not multihull specialists, so we approached five different experts in Italy, France, Australia and the UK and asked them for ideas for a range of multihull power boats from 60-80 feet. Each came back with a proposal and we chose <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/53" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philippe Briand Ltd. (Company)">Philippe Briand</a> because his single-piece catamaran design was very different from the stereotypical power cats that are usually derived from sailboat hulls. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289250/image/large-cccababfe583d0e338c83eb95bbfd065.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289250"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289251/image/large-836bc3029ed909b4674c7049afa30838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289251">What makes it different from regular catamarans? &nbsp;First, there’s the length-to-beam ratio. A normal catamaran is around 50:50 and a monohull 50:25. We’re at 50:35, so you get a wider hull, hence more interior volume and deck space. So it’s somewhere in between, but without that uncomfortable corkscrew motion that cats tend to have on the water and double the berth space. The one-piece hull gave us the opportunity to have more volume below deck and especially a full-beam master suite between the two hulls – something you can’t have on a normal cat because the hulls are too far apart. It also meant that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a> could develop an elegant exterior profile in line with our monohull series rather than a boxy-looking catamaran. Usually there’s always a compromise or trade-off, but this made perfect sense all the way. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289253/image/large-41d6ad957cba6be413b8242848f6876d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289253"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289254/image/large-4d1f9bf5d70b885dda016a1071036759.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289254"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289257/image/large-d7a824dc7f6261a4a48cae95cdcb3404.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289257">How do those advantages translate into performance?The project was designed from the outset with fuel efficiency in mind alongside the foiling, hydrogen-powered BGH chase boat developed for the America’s Cup. That meant ultra-efficient hull lines, lightweight construction as weight is critical in catamaran design, and optimisation of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion system with around 50 percent less power than a 90-foot monohull of comparable volume. The IPS800 pod drive, in spite of a 600 horsepower rating, is so efficient that it runs like it’s 800 horsepower. We built and tested a one-to-scale scale model and the performance results confirmed our predictions. Based on 300 hours of use, we expect a saving of 130 litres of fuel per hour and 175 tonnes of CO2 compared to a similar 90-foot monohull. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289248/image/large-e2f2c5dfa4d4e3d24b2c5649217cb58a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289248"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289246/image/large-2a600bae7bfe7ec6446faeee367da1e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289246">The first BGM75 doesn’t have stabilisation – was that envisaged from the start?Catamarans are inherently stable, but because of their short roll period they are tricky to stabilise further. Certainly stabilisation wasn’t required on our prototype boat, but that had a very rudimentary superstructure with a different vertical centre of gravity. I dislike the movement catamarans have on the water and the first time I tried a power cat I actually called Max Perotti and asked him if he was sure we were doing the right thing! By coincidence, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/53" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Philippe Briand Ltd. (Company)">Philippe Briand</a> called me shortly afterwards and I asked him the same question. “Don’t worry,” he said, “It’ll be fine.” He was right, of course. The BGM is not a conventional catamaran and behaves differently, but still has built-in stability. However, we will continue to test the BGM75 in the coming months to see whether gyro stabilisation might be desirable, especially at anchor. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289249/image/large-598f4007a22b5597f95fb129f442a1e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289249">Is the BGM75 scalable in size?For sure. We’re developing two more models of 65 and 85 feet. There are also different layouts available, so in the case of the BGM75 the second hull will have the galley on main deck and four cabins below deck with separate stairs for the crew. We’ve also agreed with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> to install their new pilot hybrid IPS system, probably starting with the BGM65, which can eventually be combined with hydrogen fuel cells developed from the BGH project. With the experience from the same project we’re also looking at a BGF range where the ‘F’ stands for foiling.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289280/image/large-6d65fffb144eb6e16c3e37d3df5659ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289280">

The Designers’ Protocol was launched at this year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/182" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2023">Monaco Yacht Show 2023</a> to present the industry with a standardised document aiming to provide designers with guiding sustainability principles. As such, they have considerable influence on steering their clients towards responsible decisions. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows wrap around the entirety of the yacht, reducing the distinction between the outside and inside, forming a tranquil atmosphere onboard.
